Our Story


Arlington Camera, located in the heart of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, has been offering the latest camera gear and knowledgeable, friendly service to our customers since 1987. But it all began with a love of photography, and a family passion. 


A Love of Photography Runs In Our Family.

Harry D. Porter, one of Arlington Camera’s founders, was always fascinated by photography. While living in California, he studied cinematography at UCLA and later was employed by a Los Angeles camera store. Several years later, Harry became a Sales Representative for Interstate Photo Supply.

 

In 1972, Bill Porter, Harry’s youngest son, also began a photographic career working for Interstate Photo in the repair department, and later as a Sales Representative. 

With Harry and Bill’s combined experience in the field of photographic sales and equipment, they felt the next logical step was to acquire their own camera business. In 1983, father and son invested in an existing camera store called Craig’s Cameras, located in Arlington’s Town North Shopping Center. The business name was officially changed to Arlington Camera on April 1, 1987. With that development, a dream became a reality.

Harry’s wife, Virginia, also joined in the family venture and expertly ran the film counter. Soon another son, Jim Porter, also joined the sales staff. In January of 2023, unfortunately Jim passed away. Learn more about his life here. In addition to the Porter family members, Mae Pitchford and Gil Kannenberg were also early employees at Arlington Camera.


During the last thirty-five years, Arlington Camera has relocated within the original shopping center and has expanded twice. Our family has grown, but our love for photography remains a constant. Bill’s wife, Angela, along with their two adult children, Melanie and Danny, have been an integral part of the business for many years. Our highly trained and extremely knowledgeable employees, if not actual family members, are certainly an important part of the Arlington Camera Family.


The Porter Family, as well as the entire Arlington Camera Staff, would like to warmly welcome you as one of our customers and friends. We began in the days of film and darkroom and have evolved in step with the ever-changing photo industry. We are an Authorized Dealer for many of the most sought-after brands, and never sell gray market products.

Our staff members, each of whom have been with us for many years, consists of a great group of experts with well over 200 combined years of experience. We are here to assist you with the finest photographic gear, one-on-one advice, services, workshops, and other support you may need to become the best photographer you can be! 


As a local, three-generation, family-owned store, we have proudly supported and participated in many state and regional photography organizations.
